This is also why the speedy characters of Dragon Ball are perfect for a high-intensity 2D fighter games like FighterZ, and why One Piece’s overpowered plunderers are a natural fit for Musou games like the Pirate Warriors series. This sort of fighting blueprint that Masashi Kishimoto created for his world of ninjas somehow translated exceptionally well into an arena fighter, where characters were functionally the same with varying degrees of abilities to spice things up. Naruto’s world of chakra-wielding ninjas all follow the same mould in a sense, as they all primarily use hand-to-hand combat, have shurikens and kunai at their disposal, can quickly evade attacks by substituting themselves with a log, and all have signature, magical jutsus that, for the most part, relies on your classical elements. One Piece characters don’t have a unified form of fighting, so making each character unique while still being fun and easy to play isn’t the easiest of tasks. Dragon Ball characters mostly fly, so their heightened mobility calls for more long-range laser attacks. What seems to make Naruto’s pantheon of characters the best at creating this sort of arena fighter can probably be attributed to the way these characters fight. Even newer manga like One Punch Man and My Hero Academia followed suit with mixed results. Naruto’s contemporaries, namely Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 and One Piece: Burning Blood, did well but didn’t exactly reach the level of faithfulness that Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 provided for fans.
Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 went on to sell over 5.8 million copies worldwide and in its wake, it seemed like every shonen manga wanted to cash in and make their own 3D arena fighter as well. The cherry on top was the expansive character roster of over 100 fighters, with each character having their own special skills and extra costumes. The game also didn’t shy away from using other gameplay methods to recreate these scenes and provide the right gameplay mechanics to fulfil it, whether it be high-intensity quick-time events or large-scale, Dynasty Warrior-like battles.
Starting with the final battle between Madara Uchiha and Hashirama Senju, all the way to the final fight that mirrors it, Naruto and Sasuke’s duel that ended the fourth Shinobi War. In Ultimate Ninja Storm 4, everything was kicked up a notch, as every major battle could be faithfully recreated into a playable scenario for players. This way, specific strengths and weaknesses of individual characters, like Rock Lee’s speed when taking off his ankle weights, or Kakashi and Sasuke’s Chidori only being able to be executed in a straight line, could be translated perfectly into 3D.
The Ultimate Ninja Storm games allowed every character to run, jump, do combos, and perform jutsus in 3D. This allowed for more dynamic battles that were more faithful to the manga and anime. After five games, the new Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm series started, which finally put players in the third-person view. Naruto, while being a lot younger than Dragon Ball, also started things with a 2.5D series of fighting games called the Ultimate Ninja series. Dragon Ball Z, of course, kicked things off with the Budokai Tenkaichi series that featured over-the-shoulder 3D battles where players could fly and shoot energy beams in any direction they pleased. The emergence of 3D fighting games made the transition from page to screen a lot smoother, and truly allowed fans to recreate the fights from their favourite franchises. After the fighting game boom of the ‘90s, it was only natural that popular manga would follow suit, though these early 2D entries often saw mixed results when it came to fan reception. Shonen manga and fighting games go hand-in-hand, and complement each other thanks to the vast amount of fights and fighters.
